What happens to your mail

Tiho is a mail program. It opens your own mailbox at your own provider: Microsoft 365, Yandex, Fastmail, mail on your own domain. We do not hand out mailboxes and we do not create them.

Why the browser version is built differently

A browser cannot open connections to mail servers: it only speaks HTTP, and mail runs on other protocols. So the connection to your mail server is held by our server, and the page asks it with ordinary requests.

The app for phone and computer is built differently, and better: it goes to the mailbox directly, and your correspondence does not pass through us at all. In a browser that is not possible — either through a server, or there is no web version.

What we see and what we do not keep

Signing in with Microsoft

You type your Microsoft password on Microsoft's own page, not on ours — we do not see it and cannot see it. All we get is the permission you granted to read and send mail, and you can withdraw it in your Microsoft account at any moment.

Exactly two permissions are requested: reading mail over IMAP and sending over SMTP. No access is requested to files, to the calendar, or to the list of colleagues.

Signing in with a password

For providers without Microsoft sign-in, an ordinary password remains. It is passed to your mail server and lives in the session's memory while the session is open. If the mailbox has two-factor protection you need an app password — an ordinary one will not be accepted.

Images in messages

Images in mail often exist in order to tell the sender that the message was opened, when, and from where. So they are not loaded until you ask for them yourself.
